Where to Start With Organic Gardening? By Marcia Gallik
|
| Wednesday, December 31, 2008 |
For many organic farmers, farming or gardening is a passion. We feel a connection to the earth, and we believe it has become a moral duty to protect and provide for her. Apart from the spiritual filiation apparently, it's just fun to be playing in the sun in the earth and watching things grow - I never dreamed I do until my wife introduced me Pamela to organic gardening as a way to help feed our menagerie of exotic animals and helps distract me from my hectic life of the company.
Those who take up organic gardening often have no idea where to buy supplies, for example. They do not know what products they need to feed the soil or pest control. May they not known how water supply or follow composting their kitchen gardens. They need more of an organic garden tips and ideas. Many will need hand-helding through their first step in organic gardening.
Imagine growing a beautiful garden or orchids, or other plants and be the envy of all your neighbors:)
Here are just a few tips to help you get started in the right direction with organic gardening:
- First, you must choose what you grow up and decide how much you'll need to plant according to your needs or sales targets. Without knowing what you want to put in your basement, you can not start organic gardening.
- Second, you need to keep the soil healthy. Healthy soil produces healthy plants. Plant health, such as human health, are better able to resist the disease.
- Use ladybugs. Yes, ladybugs (or ladybirds as they are called). These small insects pretty bright red with black spots and control aphids naturally. You can order them from several locations on the organic garden of the Internet. Until they arrive, each spray aphid-infested plants well watered with soapy water and rinse with clear water.
- You will also need to know how to make compost. Make compost of the lazy, by mixing the leaves, lawn clippings and kitchen waste. Then just leave it until it is ready. Nature's recyclers take the organic matter, no matter how it is presented and turn it into a rich, beautiful dark compost.
These are just a few tips that took the Organic Gardening, my "bible" for organic gardening.

10 Organic Gardening Uses For Comfrey By Julie Williams
|
|
Comfrey (Symphytum officinale) is one of those plants that every organic garden must have more and more. It also has the great merit as a medicinal plant. The plant serves us so well. Propagation is by root division. But be careful with this plant because it will increase from the smallest piece of root.
OK, some of its best uses (and least known)!
1. A valuable contribution of the mass for the compost heap. It is a very good micro-nutrient accumulator - from a fertilizer plant. The leaves are rich in nitrogen, silica, calcium, potassium, iron and magnesium.
2. Comfrey is an activator of compost.
3. Use as a mulch around your vegetables. You can harvest growth several times a year from mid-spring. Make sure you put the leaves in the sun for a few hours to wilt so that it does not take root.
4. It can be used as a fertilizer, placed directly in the trenches before planting potatoes, beans, peas etc. (again, make sure you wilt the leaves).
5. The deep roots of this plant is the ideal tool to break up heavy clay soils. It will also provide nutrients that are leached deep into the ground.
6. Create a liquid fertilizer rich in nutrients. Place comfrey leaves in a small amount of water for a week or more, then dilute 10:1. This liquid is excellent for potassium feed hungry crops such as tomatoes.
7. Grow comfrey as a grass barrier. Chop pieces of root in a hollow in your mulch on all 40cm / 16inches and cover with compost or good soil. Over time, creating a thick barrier that does not even read compete. Comfrey dies with the freezing winter, but it is the grass. Comfrey in the spring before the growth of grasses do.
8. Use as a nutrient trap at the bottom of your garden (if you have a slope). It will increase rank and prevent nutrients escaping your garden by leaching.
9. Expand your garden beds. Divide the roots to create many new plants very quickly. Very useful as a ground cover.
10. Comfrey is sometimes known as "knit-bone" as it has traditionally been used as a poultice to heal fractures. It is rich in calcium that May be it is used in this way.
The conditions for growth
Comfrey is a hardy herbaceous plant which grows in most soil types. It will survive frosts, but tends to lose most of its leaves in winter, then rebounded with the arrival of warmer weather. You get the best performance of lush leaves if you provide a moist, fertile soil.
Comfrey is an excellent companion plant for most vegetable crops.
Wow, what amazing plant. Now you see why Comfrey is a "must have" in a system of organic gardening. Buy your first comfrey plant only if you do not know anyone who has. I am sure they give you a piece of the root to start. I hope this gives you more ideas for Comfrey in your organic garden.

Successful Organic Gardening In Containers By Julie Williams
|
|
The space can be at a premium, especially these days when apartments and condos are so popular. A simple solution for those who want to develop at least some basic herbs and vegetables is to grow in containers. Maybe you do not have time to maintain a large vegetable garden, or if you have a physical condition that prevents you from bending or using the usual gardening tools. Whatever the reason, container gardening can be an excellent way to produce some of your organic food needs.
While container gardening May its limitations, there are major advantages.
* You have the advantage of being able to make inside the containers through the coldest part of winter.
* Your pots / containers can create a focal point on a balcony or terrace, add interest, color or foliage.
* The planters can be made from any type of container that contains the soil and allows adequate drainage.
* Potting mediums are easy to work because they are pH.
* Weeds are much less likely to become a problem.
* Fewer chance of being attacked by snails and slugs and diseases transmitted through the floor.
* The smallest space - even a window can be used to produce fresh herbs
Soil
You must purchase premium potting mix for growing in containers. Do not be tempted to use your garden soil in pots, because it is compact and heavy, not allowing water to drain well. A premium potting soil is a must. It is lightweight and has excellent drainage.
You need to provide all the nutrients your pot plants, as most mixtures are not supplied with organic fertilizer. Remember that more is not better when it comes to the application of fertilizer. Too much fertilizer in contact with the roots of your plant will burn. Always follow the directions on the package of fertilizer. There are many organic fertilizers at your disposal to study mixtures adapted to the nature of the plant you are growing - leaves, flowers, vegetables, etc.
Container plants need water more often than normal garden plants, and consequently, water infiltrates no fertilizer. Thus, container grown plants benefit from liquid flow on a regular basis throughout their growing season. You can buy liquid organic fertilizer if you do not have room to make your own. Use them for food and foliage drenching the soil around your plants.
Watering
Because container plants are above ground the sun and wind dry ground faster than plants grown in soil. During the summer, you should take care that your pots do not dry.
Water containers when the soil dries to a depth of 2 to 1 cm (1 / 2 inch). Apply water at a rate to be gentle on your plants and soil. In really hot weather I usually re-water about 30 minutes after my first watering. This is beneficial in containers as plants can not always take the water quickly.
It is important to ensure that your containers have drainage or your plants will suffer and die in the end, if the roots are permanently sitting in water. If your containers sit on the floor of the bottom drain holes May not easy. If they are on a patio or are adjacent to the land, there should be no fundamental problem of the holes. If you're not sure, make side holes.
The parts of an old clay pot or stealing son placed above the hole will keep the pot mixture packing around the holes and reducing drainage, as well as remaining in the pot.
You can add mulch to larger pots in summer to help prevent them from drying out. I like to use straw peas.
Choosing the right plants
When you're growing in containers, you'll need to search for varieties that are most suitable for cultivation on small areas. Many plants contain excellent specimens. You can start with some of the smaller vegetables such as radish, lettuce, onions, peppers or hot pepper, eggplant, short varieties of carrots, bush beans etc. Container planting is ideal to try some techniques for planting companion. You'll have more success if your plant combinations are happy! If you plant in three successive weeks in May you be able to achieve a continuous production of certain plants.
You can also try some vines you railing or trellis for support. Strawberries grow well in containers, hanging baskets particularly if they are not allowed to dry.
Location
Choose a position for you container plants where they receive about six hours Sunday, each day, preferably in the morning rather than Sunday afternoon Sunday. or May also need to protect plants from falling into the strong wind. If you have a lot of pots, they might offer some protection for the other. Place the largest plants along the wall or trellis.
Many conventional gardeners find themselves with more than plants in containers. I do not think any other way to grow mint as they are simply impossible if they escape into the garden. And how many people have space for a bay tree to maturity, when they use only a few pages a week?
Yes, they take a little more carefully, but we are rewarded for our premiums. Try growing a few pots together. They look good and they provide a micro-climate for the other. Good luck to you!

But if found on seedlings, they can kill the plants. The larger, well-established plants they do little harm. However, in corn and potato flea beetles can transmit serious diseases. Potato beetles transmit bacterial early May. Corn flea beetles can transmit a bacterium called Stewart Wilt.
The adults are tiny ranging from 1 / 16 to 1 / 4 inch long and are of different colors including black, green or blue-black, green or yellow. They extended legs that enable them to jump like fleas. The larvae are thin, white feed on roots, tubers, stems and less underground.
Adult flea beetles overwinter in the debris in or near fields or plants. At the end of the year and remove the plant surface to remove debris in hibernation equipment.
The eggs are deposited in the soil near the base of the host plant in May and need a week or more to hatch. Treat the soil with beneficial nematodes can help control the larvae.
Plant later than usual so warmer temperatures may help overcome the power plants in the beetles.
Use the rotation plantation. Do not plant the same crop in bed the next year.
Dedusting plants diatomaceous earth, ashes, ground limestone, or even the flour has been used successfully.
Homemade sticky traps work well. Flea beetles are attracted to white and yellow. To minimize the pitfalls of milk white sides, other white plastic containers, meat trays styrofoam and pieces of about four to six inches square. Coat the pieces with a sticker. Petroleum jelly, lard, grease and non-setting glue have been found useful. Wash the capture and reuse of beetles.
For a yellow trap take Flypaper and attach it to something solid like a lightweight board that can be placed upright or cardboard attached to a heavy wooden game.
Some people have found beer traps successful.
For plants that do not need pollinating insects, cover with planting beds or gauze line covers a material to prevent the entry of beetles.
Altise as hot, dry soils. Fogger or a fine spray to keep the soil moist and mulch help.
Plant beets, carrots, beets, radishes, fresh spinach and other crops loving few weeks later. They also trap effectively to protect the cultures of other plants.
Composed of natural repellent nicotinia, cats, and wormwood. Make a tea and spray crops. Another natural repellent is a garlic and pepper spray. Altise hatred and this combination will quickly leave. Reapply after rain or watering.
If all else fails, insecticides make from plants such as rotenone can be applied.

Constructing Garden Steps by: Hege Crowton
|
|
Steps like a perfect opportunity to beautify the outside than any other item on the agenda of your landscaping. The materials that can be used vary from a round ball cut concrete, brick or stone.
Not the standard dimensions for the outside must be the same as for the interior of the measures, particularly in areas frequently used. The tread should be 10 inches deep and risers of 7 1 / 2 inches.
Treads should be 1 / 4 inch lower in front than in the rear to allow drainage. For anything other than a series of logs, a good basis is essential. The foundation should extend 6 inches below the frost line.
Concrete is a material often used for measurements, even if it is not always the most attractive. A simple form can be constructed from a series of boxes, lx 6 - or 8-inch lx scrap lumber, each box is the same width of 10 inches, but shorter than the box every step.
The boxes are placed on top of one another and held together by spikes outside lathing. The corners must be stopped. Use 1 part Portland cement to 3 parts 6 parts of sand and gravel. The cement is poured and the tops are not made using the flat edge of a board.
If you are using pre-cast concrete blocks, the need for forms of construction of the stage is eliminated. The cost is about the same as the construction of concrete measures, although employment, especially for a one-man operation is easier.
It is important to stick the blocks together and you can get a good appearance, with a thin layer of concrete aggregate.
Brick is not built in the same manner as concrete blocks, although more masonry skill is required. A layer of gravel is first placed on the basement as a foundation. The weak measures of bricks, many joints are necessary.
In the construction of stone steps, the main challenge is to find the stone. Although this is not a problem at all in some areas, in other areas, the stone must be purchased, and when this is true, stone steps are by far the most expensive type to build. They are also among the most attractive.
Stone steps can be constructed of masonry, without bail, if enough stones can be found. The principles of construction of dry stone walls which is applicable. If steps are independent, mortar should be used. The foundation must be established for measures of bricks.
The concrete used to make beds for the stones must be placed carefully to maintain a good structure. Grading must be done with precision (the chain is recommended).
It is best to remove the spilled mortar stones while still wet, because when it is dry, it presents a problem. Dry mortar, however, may be removed with hydrochloric acid.
Cup of roundwood from large logs make a beautiful and easy to package. The tour is set down in the earth, and next to cover partially, leaving a riser. The floor is completed as part of graduate and packed firmly, and this procedure is followed to the desired height.
Action of wood can be used for long slopes where there is no need for real action, but it is too steep for a path. Ramp steps can be made with large stone risers flags, logs or squared timber.
The paths that lead to action should have the same width as the steps. The ramps should not increase too rapidly, the largest increase of 3 / 4 inch per foot.

Choosing a Hydroponic Grow Light by: Katherine Keleher
|
|
HID bulbs configurations have been the dream of the year around horticulture a possibility for tens of thousands of indoor growers and industrial nursery gardeners everywhere. Thank you to their amazing production (up to ten times more than lm W incandescent bulbs) and a range of colors that plants prefer, indoor gardeners are able to achieve incredible performance around the year. Metal halide (MH) lamps out mainly bluish light, which makes them good for the development phase vegetate.
HID lighting is used worldwide by industry growers. HID lamps provide various benefits that are otherwise unattainable with incandescent bulbs and fluoro. HID auxiliary lighting allows the industrial harvest of farmers to increase crop production to send the market on time and bring out all the plants that climate can be very advantageous financially. HID lighting is so effective and intense inside that many gardeners benefit from its use in the year. HID lamps are managed by a stock one hundred ten to one hundred and twenty volts AC wall power and a standard three-pin adapter to connect most of the lamps come with growing resistance ballast and reflection lightbulb cover.
Plants have unrivaled power to build their own energy. In the function known as photosynthesis, chlorophyll, using light energy to process CO2 from the oxygen and H2O in the land of nutrients and sugars. When these nutrients are essential in many environments to the desired growth of nutrients is bound only by those aspects that have an impact on photosynthesis, are the strength, color and time of day, after the daylight the plant absorbs.
High pressure sodium (HPS) bulbs emit mainly reddish light, which leads to fruit and fruit magnified in the phase of fruiting plants. Cooler (blue) and warm (orange) colors in the rainbow increase the production of chlorophyll and energy fruit. Cooler light is most evident during the summer months when the sun is higher in the sky. It is important to maintain tight plant growth and well-shaped. The warming of light, like when the sun is lower in the sky during the autumn harvest calendar months, is crucial for the establishment of flowering plants in the form of flowers and fruit yield.
So if you want to grow, most bushy crops such as cabbage and vegetation of herbs, your best option is a factory for metal halide lamps arrangement. If you choose to grow flowering plants, the lamp High-pressure sodium is your best choice. In fact, there are bulbs conversion allows you to get a type of organization and implement the two types of bulbs. Conversion lamps cost more but give you the added advantage of being able to start your crops with the metal halide bulb ensuring tense, the development of small and conversion to high pressure sodium bulb when the plants are to flourish and grow to increase production. The most recent discovery is convertible in May ballast resistors employing regular metal halide and high pressure sodium lamps.
The leader in the use of a garden setting is HID lamps control, it allows you on your growing conditions of the plant. Hydroponic grow lights we all platforms to extend the period of the year, more and more to provide our plants with a preferred alternative to the interior on Sunday. This is a key element for those with an exercise price on the supply of new vegetables and flowers of herbaceous plants.
Another advantage of growing in lighting is your power to control the duration of sunlight, giving you the ability to force your flowering species, even if not fully in the season. Remember, increasing the choice of plants, the key to the color of the light is perfect, concentration and retention.
Take high-performance light bulbs in horticulture to the next level by using only the highest-class voters. You can now get blisters coming May near normal to simulate sunlight. The last burning blue metal halide lamps produce colors very nicely. Even more critical is the maturation they could make in your garden. You have very low, bushier plants, as vital as could be quite healthy and with the basics. This is generally the opposite of plants grown under high pressure sodium ordinary stock and metal halide lamps.

Beware of Toxic Mulch by: Michael McGroarty

Mulching beds has become extremely popular these days, and mulch can be very beneficial for your plants and soil in your planting beds, but there are things you need to look.
Here in Ohio the most popular type of mulch that people use is shredded bark mulch of wood, which is a byproduct of the wood industry. When they move logs to the sawmill the first thing they do is debark them. Years ago the bark was a huge problem for plants because it does not seem to be a useful purpose for it, until people realized that it had hidden benefits. Even to this day, the bark is a headache for sawmills, and they do not understand how to properly manage.
They like to pile it as high as they can so it takes up less space in their backyard. The mulch tends to really save during the winter months because there is little demand. For plants of the pile mulch high, they literally have to drive large front end loaders up onto the pile. Of course, the weight of these large machines compact mulch in the stack, and it can become a huge problem for you or me, if we happen to have some mulch were stacked too high, too compact and tight.
When trees are first debarked the mulch is fairly fresh, and must decompose before we dare use around our plants. The process of decomposition and oxygen requires the flow of air into the pile. When the mulch is compacted too tight, this air flow can not take place, and that the mulch continues to decompose, it becomes extremely hot as the organic matter ferments. Sometimes, extreme heat combined with the inability to release the heat can cause the battery to catch fire by spontaneous combustion.
In other cases, the mulch heats up, can not release the gas, and the mulch actually becomes toxic. When this occurs the mulch develops an overbearing odor that will take your breath away as you dive into the pile. When disseminating this toxic mulch around your plants the gas it contains is released, and this gas can and will burn your plants.
It happened to me twice. Once in my own house, and once on a job I was doing for a client. This toxic mulch is very powerful. We have reversed a bit of mulch in the foliage of a Dwarf Alberta Spruce that we were mulching around, and only a few minutes later brushed the mulch the plant. The next day my customer noticed that one side of the plant was brown. The mulch has been there for only a matter of minutes.
Not only do I have to replace the Dwarf Alberta Spruce, but the mulch also damaged at least 10 other plants that I had to replace. I saw where someone once ordered a truck load of mulch, he has thrown in their entry, and that the toxic mulch slid out of the bucket on the asphalt the toxic gas which was published on the set lawn next to the aisle.
The gas, not the mulch, turned the grass brown next to the mulch pile.
This same person spread several yards of mulch around their house before they realized the problem, and it ruined many of their facilities.
Now here's the most difficult trying to explain how to identify toxic mulch. He has a very strong odor that will take your breath away. But again almost all mulch is a powerful smell. This is very different from your typical mulch smell, but I can not explain it better.
The mulch looks perfectly normal, maybe a little darker than usual. If you suspect a problem with the mulch you take a couple of shovels full, and place it around an inexpensive plant. Maybe just a couple of flowers. By this test, use a straw mulch inside the cell and not on the edges. The mulch on the edge of the battery is more than likely released most of the toxic gases that took place in May.
If, after 24 hours, the plants are in agreement, the mulch should go. The purpose of this article is not to cause panic at the mulch yard, but toxic mulch can do serious damage. At my house it burned the law leaves some plants in my landscape, and burned the grass beside the bed all the way around the house. It looked like someone took a torch and burned the grass about 2 "all around the bed. If I had not seen with my own eyes, I would not have believed. |

10 Tips for Successful Rose Planting by: Kathy Burns-Millyard
|
|
Planting roses is not complicated, as long as you have good advice and tips to start with ...
1. Check with your garden center or florist for the best type of roses to grow in your climate. If you are a novice, you should look? disease-resistant types of roses because they require much less maintenance.
2. When planting roses, you want to choose a place that is well lit in the morning. You also want an area that is lit for at least 6 hours per day. Roses need lots of light if they are to grow properly. If you live in a very hot climate, although you'll probably get the best results by not planting your roses in direct sunlight.
3. Choose an area that has many well-drained soil. Great soil has a pH level where the amount of acid in the soil is about 5.5-7.0. You can get a kit to test the soil at any Garden Center.
4. The organic matter such as manure or lime helps to feed the roots of your roses. You should soak the roots in the puddle of water or clay for many minutes, and cut off any root ends are broken.
5. The first 3-4 weeks after planting your roses, you often need their water. Usually, this is when the top 2 inches of soil is dry. Roses need plenty of moisture and food to stay healthy.
6. Four weeks after planting, you should start soaking the bed every 2 weeks or more. You should do the morning for best results.
7. Beginning fertilization about 3 months after planting. Use 3.6 inches of mulch to control humidity, temperature, and weeds always come. The mulch can also block essential nutrients your roses need to stay healthy.
8. Spring planting is the best.
9. You want to plant your roses in an area that is well distributed with air. Your roses will not grow in an enclosed or tight area.
10. Dig a hole that is twice as large as the amount of space that your roses take. It makes it easier to plant and creates a space for them to grow with freedom. Poor circulation to your roses can cause fungal diseases. Using a larger hole, it is also easier for you to learn the latest and pot if you wish.

6 Indoor Plants That Love The Dark: A Tip From The Garden Center Nursery by: Flor Buenaventura
|
| Friday, December 26, 2008 |
It was a long search that took me more than ten years. But finally I found - the indoor house plants that will illuminate the end of a corridor 5 meters from my front door. The aspidistra, commonly known as the iron plant, has GRACED the drawing rooms of many another prostitute Victorian English manor, and today thanks to my house bricks suburban Sydney.
Many experts describe the aspidistra gardening as one of the toughest and most adaptable house plants. Its long thin strip of dark green or variegated white and dark green leaves shoot off the ground, but in blocks and up to 75 cm in height and 15 cm wide.
It is a low maintenance, such as a plant is very even-tempered woman who does not need any Füssing overcome, but still maintains its sweet nature. Need very low light, temperature and humidity and average only occasional watering.
Other plants that do not need much light
Low-light plants are generally defined as those that can survive at 25 to 75 foot candles - that is, a place that is 4 to 5 meters in a bright window, just enough light to read by comfortably, but when switched on, by artificial lighting a day would end brightness.
You can easily find their place in the aspidistra nursery garden center. In addition, five other plants that will serve very low light situations are as follows:
Aglonema (Chinese Evergreen), which are among the few plants that prefer only moderate light and adapt well to low light. It has large dark green leathery oval leaves, then tapering later develop a basic Caney.
Drachaena deremensis varieties (also known as Happy or Fortune Plants), which are usually white and thin leafed different. The family Drachaena Caney plants are crested with decorative rosettes of straplike foliage.
Holly fern that adapts to low light and Boston fern a fishbone type of fern that will remain in low light for many months, but need a spell in brighter light to rejuvenate.
Neanthes Bella parlor or Palm, which is more suitable for low light situations than most palms.
Sansevieria (also known as mother-in-law's Tongue), which maintains low to bright light is very angry, upright leaves straplike usually with cream-colored margins and an unusual banding of gray-green center.
If you run into any trouble finding a plant that will illuminate the dark corner, why not try one of these favorites of mine robust and charming?

Gardening is fun and rewarding in May and be considered a hobby, talent or both, and sometimes it's just luck. Gardening is not as easy as it looks and involves dedication, time and consistency and many trials and errors. There are many aspects to maintain a healthy garden, but some aspects are more important than others. A person who likes to garden can have the knowledge to produce the best garden in the world, but without the right equipment and materials it just would not be possible.
Below is a list of top 5 pieces of equipment which gardeners simply can not live without:
1. Trowel - A trowel is a shovel-like piece of equipment that is used to dig up dirt and small plants together. There are many styles to choose and the type of handle on your trowel will determine how well it works. Ergonomic handle, non-slide and anti-slip handles are the best form of the handle to choose. These will be easier to use and require less work than any other form of trowel. A trowel, without adhesion will be difficult to use and could ultimately ruin your garden. Try one in your hand first to make sure he feels comfortable. There's nothing like having your hand cramps or trowel drag while using digging in a beautiful new plant.
2. Pitchfork - A fork is a gardening tool that has pins 2-6 and a long handle. The sizes range from forks, depending on what they are used to. The space between each pin also varies. Forks are used to separate, lift and throw loose pieces of materials such as dirt and leaves.
3. Spade - A gardening shovel has a long, thick neck and a heavy blade flat. This tool is used to dig and move pieces of dirt from one place to another. It can also be used to pack down the dirt once the flower has been planted.
4. Pruning shears - pruning shears are tools that have long handles and blades. This type of gardening equipment is used to allow gardeners to prune roses precisely and other plants and unruly vines, etc. It can also be used to cut grass on the edge of driveways and garden beds, in places difficult access. It is also used for cutting edges and remove dead leaves or wood on flowers. There is no other piece of gardening equipment that can do the same job as pruning shears. Without the use of this piece of equipment, your garden to look messy and disorganized end. Always, always, always invest in quality pruning shears. Vouchers have a lifetime warranty and low-end that will shrapnel of your heritage is lifted.
5. Wheelbarrow - A wheelbarrow is one of the largest pieces of garden equipment. It is a basket with a handle and at least one wheel that is designed to facilitate the transportation of goods from one place to another. Buying a wheelbarrow will save you much time and effort, especially if you are in the compost heap, and will experience a pleasant garden. Another option is the 4-wheeled garden cart.
There are many pieces of gardening equipment that will make this hobby easier and more effective, however those listed above are recognized as the most important. These pieces of equipment will probably last very long.

The Horrors of Hail
|
| Tuesday, December 23, 2008 |
One of the most dangerous things that can happen to your plants is weather. More than a garden was demolished during the night because of this phenomenon. And apparently, there is nothing we can do to prevent it. Of Of course, if the weather does not at all then we would not have those Nice sunny days that are beneficial to the growth of our plants. But then Again, we would not hail storms that tragic disassemble we worked for hours to grow.
When the rain starts to fall, generally the first reaction in a gardener is a pure joy. After all, it means you do not have to worry about out and watering manually. The natural rainfall can not be anything but good for all your thirsty plants, can he? Although even after gardener starts see the beautiful raindrops turn into small balls of ice, usually a complete emotional breakdown is in order. I know this from experience, because when I was a flower gardener, I had my garden completely demolished by about 10 minutes of severe hail.
The first time I learned my lesson on the damage hail can do, I quickly developed a method to cope. I began to keep large clay pots within 10 feet my garden, so that at any sign of hail I could run outside and have the plants in the shelter a matter of seconds. That saved me from being forced watching my plants be torn into pieces on several occasions. I never treated with hail more than an inch in diameter, but I guess that if there has been any baseball size, these pieces of pots was quickly demolished.
However, as the number of fragile plants in my garden grew, it became impractical to have a pot for each plant, and to carry out each place before substantial damage had already occurred. After much thought, I ended up building a horizontal screen retractable mechanism made a strong but flexible wire mesh. At any sign of rain I could Pull the screen on my garden and have instant protection. Not only he left through rain, hail, but collected regularly provided the drop of water provided as a day later. This project cost me several hundred dollars, and more blood, sweat and tears that can be measured with earth dollars. Therefore, I would not recommend it to everyone.
If it is too late for you, and you recently lost your precious plants the wicked balls of ice, then you're probably looking for any way help recover the plants. Unfortunately there is not much choice for you. The best thing you can do is give them the tender care they deserve, and attempt to nurse them back to health over a long period of time. The several weeks after being severely damaged by hail are essential to whether the plant survives or not. If you expect more rain or wind, you should keep the plant covered. In this fragile, even the drops of rain or strong breeze could cause more damage.
So if you live in an area that experiences often hail, you should some have certainly plan to protect your plants. By meeting and watching them be ripped to shreds should never be an option! |

Preparing Your Garden fo the Winter
|
|
Some people believe that when the weather begins to cool and the leaves begin to fall, it's time to put away garden tools and wait until next spring to work on their new garden. Wrong. Winter is a important to keep your garden's health and to ensure good Culture for next year. May you think that might take time to prepare your garden, but the truth is that it takes less than a day to prepare your garden for next winter.
When night temperatures drop to less than forty-five degrees Fahrenheit for more than four days, or freeze is scheduled for your area (usually around late October or November) you know its time start preparing your garden. You should start by assessing your garden design, check the plants grew well in the last season, plants and did not. Autumn is a good time to decide which plants will remain in garden next year, and who should go.
It is also a good time to decide on new plants that you want to grow. To make your garden more colorful and healthy, make sure the plant over Hardy plants in the fall so they can resist the winter. Some fine plants will be planted in the fall are: Rudbeckia, Aster Novi-belgii, Anemone japonica, panicle hyandea, endive, escarole, and Brussels sprouts. You can find these and more and gardening magazines or your local nursery.
When you finish this, you have to start cleaning your garden. Start by tearing weeds that have arisen in May, and raking fallen leaves. Weeds and rotten leaves can carry insects and diseases that could endanger your garden. You must also remove your past annual garden plant and harvest your vegetables and other plants that can not bear winter. After the fall came and passed, the leaves will not be your trees and you can see the rotten branches. Cut off the side branches of trees is not necessary for the health of your gardens, but in May help later not to drop branches on your plants and not too blocking a lot of sun.
If you have young trees, you should consider packaging and support Issues to help them survive the winter wind and cold. Put mulch your garden for winter can be a useful way to protect Plant sudden changes in temperature and heavy snow. For mulch, you can use about five inches of shredded bark, pine needles, or a variety of other materials. You must be careful not to mulch too early, because May be some insects still alive and able to take refuge in it for winter.
Once you've finished your garden tools, you should clean and make sure they are in a safe place where they will not rust and you know where they will be for next year. Before winter arrives, you should always repellent on slugs, slugs are just one of the worst bugs to have in your garden. If you have a pool or a fountain in your garden, do not forget to take any fish that you have in them and bring them inside. There is nothing sadder than the fish frozen in a block of ice. |

Picking the Right Gardening Tools
|
|
If you want to take seriously and get your gardening there every day to increase the attractiveness of your garden, you seeking the right tools to help you in this. You might be tempted to go to the store and buy only the closest you see, but you be much happier if you put much thought in styles and types of tools you buy. There are styles designed just for gardening, and you better buy.
You can find most of the tools you need in your area or gardening home improvement store. Usually, employees will simply be happy to help you find the ideal tools. If you go to a store specializes in gardening, you can usually get advice and more service. Gardening store employees are usually a wealth of untapped wisdom, and are how I learned almost everything I know about gardening today.
If you have trouble finding the right tool or if you want save some money, you could try the online search for supplies you need. You will have to pay shipping and wait a week or two, but when you buy more than a tool, the total savings will rise. You should always buy from a reputable seller, even if, and around research advance of anything negative that people had to say about their purchase experience.
As far as digging tools go basis, you may already have everything you'll need. There are several types that you should get if for different specific tasks. A roundabout is a good shovel to dig holes for plants. A cat is necessary for all the work more complex. A garden fork you may not be use as much, but I have a tool in my shed, and I was happy for her on multiple occasions. After the different varieties of digging tools can help you minimize the work you have to do. For example, if you try digging a big hole with a little chat, you will be quite tired. The same if you try to do more detailed work with great awkward shovel.
A rake is an absolute necessity. You probably already have one, but I am guess it's a lawn rake and a garden rake. It is definitely a difference, and if you try to use a lawn rake in a garden, you not be pleased with the results. Even if you buy a ranking or an entrepreneur rake. You will need to seek a rake bowheads. I found it is best for gardening purposes. They provide maximum control and precision, so as not to accidentally rip your valuable plants.
As far as hoes go, I do not think any gardener must have less than 3. There are so many varieties on the market that I have trouble recommend one, and that is why I tell you all that I usually use. The one I use most is the onion hoe, which is very light and ideal for small crops and weeding. The Warren hoe is a greater model, with an edge. If you need to dig a hole or a dirty weed, it is one for you. There are several other varieties, but I recommend starting with those I mentioned. During your gardening savvy, you need to find several types. |

Other Factors in Garden Creation
|
| Sunday, December 21, 2008 |
So now that you have chosen this type of garden you have, what the will take place, and what type of fertilizer you need, the time has come to really started in choosing your garden environment. First, you'll need choose what your garden will be obstacles. What will separate your garden of the rest of the world? Then you'll need to choose the decorations and support for your plants. Often, a sort of metal mesh is important to keep your plant stand. You also want to choose how a lot of soil and fertilizer to buy, and how to arrange all the plants in your garden.
Choosing a border is a relatively important step in obtaining garden began. It might not affect the welfare of plants, but having a garden is a test enough for cosmetic many people anyway. Thus, generally, you want to choose between metal and wood. You can stack advice around the perimeter of your garden and give it a nice enough Look cabin. If you're looking for a more modern look, you can get some metal coating to your home improvement store rather cheap, and the installation of medium difficulty.
Find something nice-support research your plants may be a little more more difficult. Sometimes a short metal pole can work well, but often for plants such as tomatoes, you'll need a wire mesh to enable it to draw himself on the spot. You can find these at any gardening store, usually Pre-form into a kind of cone shape ideal for plants. The plant grows just through it, and usually it will last until the plant is sufficiently developed for support itself. After that you can take a pair of wire cutters and just snip free.
Deciding how to buy land may be slightly easier. Find Information on your plants and discover the depth of soil ideal. Then, digging more than from your garden, take measurements and know the exact amount of cubic feet of soil you need. Go to the shop and buy, preferably adding a few bags just so you can replenish the supply if it compresses or is lacking. If you live in an area where the soil is rough, dry, sterile and nutrients, you may want to be able to add a few inches the depth to the original recommendation.
Arranging the plants is rather important for the success of your garden. I am not talking about a kind of Feng Shui, but according to your watering, some plants could hog all the water and leave other plants high and dry. Some plants have roots more than others and are more aggressive in collecting water. If you put one of these plants next to a factory with the weak, short roots, it will quickly divert the water supply for itself and smother other plants.
I hope I led you to realize that the placement is not the only important something about a garden. There are many other factors that might not seem very important, but the amount of time their consideration could change the outcome of your garden. So if you work on creating a garden, use and reference, you can (the library, the Internet, and magazines) to look at some of the factors I mentioned. |

Creating Microclimates to Facilitate Growth
|
|
Many gardeners live in areas where almost anything can grow effortlessly. Simply plant the seeds and water for a few weeks, and you have a beautiful lush plant. But if you live somewhere like Colorado, you understand what its like to have a slim selection of plants naturally grow. It can be a challenge to facilitate the growth of a large variety of plants, especially when the world you live in seems to be rooting against you.
Some people solve this problem by loading their plants with each type of chemical and fertilizer known to man. It works normally, but for me it seems likely unnatural to rely on man made materials to keep your plants alive. Also, if I am more and more fruits or vegetables, I do not feel very comfortable eating something that is entirely composed of chemicals.
A theory of gardening that I invoked in the past to develop many types of plant is to create a "microclimate" for each type of plant. This is when you regulate the sunlight, shade, moisture, wind and the factors each plant. It sounds like a challenge, and it is. But you can regulate these factors so that the plant feels just like it is in ideal growing conditions. This can be achieved by the use of wind barriers, shade umbrellas, extra water, or different types or quantities of compost.
If you're willing to make an attempt to create microclimates, you'll need to make a detailed plan in advance. You should start by finding a large the shadow of bush or supply of trees that grow quickly and naturally in your domain. Just look at some sub-plots and see what is there. Most likely, it grew on its own without any planting or care. This is what you want to happen. Usually, the growth of a plant may cause more and more of another plant more desirable.
If you have a fence in your back yard (You'd be surprised how many people do), then you already have a good amount of shade to work with. You can start the process using micro-only the shadow of the closure, Combined with (perhaps) a large screen or in the shade of your new bush plant the other half of the day that the fence does not support. The closure is also useful for shading against the wind for very fragile plants.
Once you've created the shade, either natural or unnatural, you created a less severe miniature environment. You must remember It is a gradual process, and finding a new factory to make the shadow of other. Now your choices are a little more open. You have to go with a hardy plant like you did before, you can now choose a plant that survives in cooler weather.
If the plant you are trying to increase next requires more moisture in the air provided your area, installing a fountain or small pond can resolve this problem problem due to evaporation. May you think you do not want to waste water on a pond or fountain, but everything is going towards improving the your garden. It's like watering process, only indirectly. As advantage, the fountains are usually quite attractive and aesthetic much of your garden.
I can not explain all stages of the process, because all targets and configurations are slightly different. However, to achieve your goal, you must Research on each plant that you would like in your garden. Research everything you can about the area it flourishes, and ask you how you can emulate this area within your own garden. Almost you can always take control of the environment and recreate what you wish. Usually, all it takes is a little planning and strategy. |

Creating a Raised Bed
|
|
If your goal in planting plants that require good drainage, I'm sure you know how frustrating it is to have a site just will not cooperate. Some plants can handle the excess water that comes from being in an area that does not drain properly. In fact, it might just because they bloom more lushly. However, other plants do not cope as well, and it will cause them to die of macabre death bloated. You should always inquire about the drainage needed for each plant you buy, and make sure it will not conflict with any of the areas you are considering planting it in.
To verify the amount of water your patch designated to retain the soil, dig a hole about ten inches deep. Fill it with water, and to return to a day when all the water had disappeared. Fill it again. If the 2nd hole full of water has not gone in 10 hours, your soil has a low saturation point. This means that when water absorbs into it, it will remain for a long time before dissipating. This is unacceptable to almost all plants, and you have to do something about it if you want your plants to survive.
The usual method to improve drainage in your garden is to create a raised bed. This involves the creation of a border for a small bed, and adding enough soil and compost to it to raise it above the rest of the court of at least 5 inches. You'll be amazed at the amount of water drainage will be improved by this small change. If you plan to build a raised bed, your prospective area is either on grass or dirt. For each of these situations, you must build a little differently.
If you want to start a raised garden of a grassy area not, you will not have much trouble. Just find some sort of border to retain dirt you add. I found that there is nothing that works quite as well as some two by four. After creating the wall, you need the right amount of soil and steer manure. Depending on the length of your plan to wait before planting, you can customize the report to allow any deterioration occur in May.
If you try to install a raised bed where grass already exists, you'll have a little more difficult. You'll need to cut the grass around the perimeter of the garden, and flip it. May be this simple, but you'll need something with a significant advantage for the portion of the edges of sod and get this title. Once you have all made him upside down, it is better to add a layer of straw to discourage the grass more save. After the layer of straw, simply add all the soil and manure to direct a normal garden would need.
Planting your plants in your new area should not pose too many problems. It is essentially the same process as your usual planting session. Be sure the roots does not measure too far into the ground. The whole point of creating the bed is raised to keep the roots of saturated soil that easily. Having long roots that extend well that completely destroyed the point.
Once you plant in your new bed, you will notice an improvement almost immediately. The added soil helps improve root development. At the same time, evaporation is prevented and decomposition is discouraged. All these things added together makes an ideal environment for almost all plants to grow in. so do not be intimidated by the idea of adapting the topography of your garden. It is a simple process as I'm sure you've done, and the long-term results are worth every bit of work. |

Picking a Healthy Plant
|
| Thursday, December 18, 2008 |
When it comes to familiarize yourself with your garden, you have two choices, plant seeds or buy plants. Both have their own advantages. If you plant seeds and care for all day, you will experience is much more rewarding if you have a full and healthy plants. However, this method is much more risky. I can not tell you how many seeds I planted and never seen any trace of any kind.
If you choose to purchase the plant from a nursery and install it in your garden, it reduces a lot of work to do in good health. However, I found in the past that many incompetent nursery workers will absolutely ruin the future of the plant by putting certain chemicals or fertilizers in. I have adapted this weakness by learning to choose plants the healthiest of the bunch. Here I will discuss some techniques that I use in my selection process for plants.
May it sound superficial, but the only thing you need to check your future on plants is how they look good. With regard to plants, you can really judge a book by its cover. If a plant has been treated healthily and has no diseases or pests, you can almost always say how nice it seems. If a plant grown in soil unfit, or has any adverse effects in the lives of bugs, you can tell the Holey leaves and stalks wilted.
If you are browsing shelves of the nursery looking for your dream factory, you want to exclude anything that currently has flowers. Plants are less traumatized by the transplant if they are not flowers. It is better to find those that consist only of buds. However, if all you have to choose among flowering plants, then you should do the unthinkable and break all. It will be useful for the future health of the plant. I found that transplantation of a plant while it is in bloom in the results of a factory of death Ninety percent of the time.
Always check the roots before you plop the money to buy the plant. Of course, if the roots are in absolutely terrible, you can tell by watching the rest of the plant. But if the roots are a little out of shape, then you will probably not be able to tell just by looking at it. Inspect the roots very closely for any signs of brownness, rot or softness. The roots must always be a firm, perfectly formed infrastructure that holds all the ground. One can easily know if the roots are past their prime or before, depending on the root in the soil ratio. If there is a ridiculous amount of roots with little soil, or a strip of land with few roots, you should not buy this plant.
If you find discrepancies with the plant, either in the form of roots or any irregular features with the leaves, you should ask employees of the nursery. Although generally these things can be a sign of unhealthy factory, from time to time there will be a logical explanation for it. Always the nursery a chance before writing to the horrific. After all, they are (usually) professionals who have been dealing with plants for years.
So if you decide to take the easy route and get a plant from a nursery, you just have to remember that the health of plants has been left to someone you do not know. Usually, they do a good job, but you should always check for yourself. Also take all precautions as you can to avoid the shock of transplantation at the plant (where it has difficulty in adjusting to its new location, and therefore health problems in the future). Usually, the process goes smoothly, but it can never be too sure. |

Using Rain Barrels to Survive Droughts
|
|
If you're a gardener who has an unlimited supply of water, consider you luck. There are many of us who live in areas where the drought garden and lawn watering rules are very restrictive for the healthy growth gardens and plants. Many people drop out when they know how few gallons of water they are allowed to use, but some of us have found ways to cope with less water. There are many ways to optimize those garden to conserve water while keeping it lush.
Some of these include drip irrigation (the use of a pipe or hose with small holes to gradually seep into the roots of the plant), placement Plant in groups of equal watering needs (to avoid wasting water on Plants did not need), and using compost or mulch to protect the water and prevent drainage.
But one of the best ways to keep your garden alive during a drought is to take preventive measures. From time to time a drought is expected this in advance, or those already experienced a drought will be given some weeks of heavy rains. When this happens, you should take the opportunity to set up several barrels of rain. Many people think that it would be a time consumption, stupid thing to do. But it can save you many gallons of water, and requires no work.
Finding the barrels will probably be the hardest part. You can use your own garbage, or head of your home improvement store for about 55 gallons plastic drums. These can be expensive and difficult to transport so keep that in mind before you go to the store. You probably want cover the top of the tank with a screen of some kind of filter at all unwanted leaves or debris that could topple the roof of your house.
Once you have your barrels loan, you are faced with the decision of where in their place. Usually, during rainfall, there is a corner or segment the house that rain tends to pay off. If you take the simple Investment approach barrel, just a barrel, in all places where you see large amounts of drops. However, while this could be the best place, you will not see very high volumes of rain in the barrels.
If you want to take a more complex approach to the barrels you should consider tweaking your gutter system a bit. If you remove each individual segment and place it in a very slight slope so that all water is diverted to the corner closest to home, you can place a rain barrel at each corner. So essentially your entire house acts as a catcher -- of rain, instead of just a few feet worth of shingles. It is a way of maximize the amount of rainwater to catch your barrel.
After a heavy rainfall, each barrel probably not see very lots of rain. If it looks like it will not rain any time soon, it is a good idea of each barrel vacuum in a key central barrel. Seal and turn off the track from May to whenever you need. Then the next time it starts raining, you'll be able to quickly capture all your barrels in place without having to lug around all the water you've accumulated to this day.
The use of water barrels may seem like an idea obsolete. However, when you're in the middle of a drought and you are able to spare additional couple of gallons for your garden, in addition, the city awarded, you be grateful for every bit of time and money you spent on collecting all the rain. Just a few outings in the garden wherever starts watering, and you are a gardener very happy when water is not so abundant. |

Using Gardening to Get in Shape
|
|
While gardening is generally seen as a way to increase productive and beautiful plants to obtain tasty fruits and vegetables, some gardeners have never seen the immense amounts of exercise, can be obtained in the process of gardening . While you can get almost as much muscle (if not more) exercise as you do work, it is very productive at the same time.
May gardening You wonder what could possibly give as much exercise as work on. Just think about all the different facets of preparing a garden. There are holes to be dug, bags and pots to carry, and weeds to be pulled out. Doing all these things work contributes to almost all groups of muscles in your body.
My brother is a fanatic working on. Almost every time I ask her house, I finished interrupt some muscle toning. I never really liked to work on if, as seems that the constant lifting heavy things puts pressure on my body, not in the immediate future with positive results. But while at work, I'm almost as excited about gardening. I work outside improving my garden almost every day. I think I probably surprised my brother when he realized that I am almost as muscular as he is, but I never lifted a dumbbell!
Before going in your garden, you should always strive. Even if your goal is not to work and get exercise, it's always a good idea. Often, gardeners spend long periods of time arched or curved. This may be bad for your back. Thus, not only does it reach before, but you should always take frequent breaks if the amount you are spending time in these positions.
Weeding and size are some of the best workouts a gardener can get. With the constant squatting or standing, the legs have an excellent workout. If your weeds are particularly resistant, your arms will be particularly tonic just the effort required to remove them from the ground. If you plan on taking the whole coaching think very seriously, you should always be the passage of weapons and positions to divide the work among different areas of your body.
One of the most obvious ways to get exercise is in the transport and lifting bags and pots. Between the nursery and your home, you must move the bags several times (to the body, to your car, in your garden, and then distribute accordingly). As long as you remember to lift with your legs not your back, transporting bags and pots can give you enough training, even if you are probably not make purchases very often.
Mowing your lawn can also be a good exercise. If you have an older mower that is not self, just the fact of the grass grow will give you more of a workout than go to the gym for a few hours. During mow the lawn, you use your chest, arms, back, shoulder and keep the mower in front of you. Your thighs and butt have also worked hard to propel the mower. Not only will you get a muscle around all the work, but it can improve your heart health. It's good for you as a cardio-vascular, and a great way to lose weight because of the increased heart rate and breathing heavy.
If you plan to use gardening as a way to get in shape or lose weight, you can hardly go wrong. Be sure to stretch, drink plenty of water, and apply sunscreen. As long as you take steps to prevent some adverse effects such as pulled muscles, dehydration and sunburn, I think you'll have a great time and end up being a healthy person because of it. |

The Psychology Behind Gardening

|
I do not know what it is a garden that has always attracted human them. But they have always been very popular and an integral part of Peoples' lifestyles. Most religions as a typical garden settings some of the biggest events According to Christianity, humanity began in a garden and the son of God was resurrected in a garden. The Buddhist build gardens to allow permeate their environment. Almost all major palaces and government building has a garden. But what is so great on them? They are just a group of plants, after all.
Of course, the reasoning is fairly obvious why people behind grow food in gardens. It is to eat! If you live off the fat of the land and, indeed, survive on things from your garden, it is easy to understand the reasoning. But I think these people who plant gardens of flowers just for Research sake of Nice. There was no immediate benefit that I can see you just a bunch of flowers in your garden! However, on reflection largely on the reasons for planting decorative gardens, I designed several theories.
I think one reason why people love gardens so much is that while we have a natural desire for progress and industrialize, deep within us all Primal is a love of nature. Even if this desire is perhaps not as strong as the desire for modernism, it is still strong enough to compel us to create gardens, small outlets of nature, amidst noise and our agitation. Since being in nature is like regressing to an earlier stage of humanity, we can also decline at a time of comfort and bliss. That is why the gardens are relaxing and calming to be in. That is why the gardens are a good place to meditate and exercise tai chi. A garden is a way to escape quickly from the animation world.
I thought perhaps time that we humans feel a sort of guilt lead us to restore nature and care for her. This conviction could result from the knowledge that we, personally, but as a race, have destroyed so much of nature to get where we are today. This is the least we can do for build a small garden in memory of all the trees we kill every day. It's my theory that the underlying reason for most people to take gardening as a hobby.
Gardening is certainly a good practice if not get me wrong. Any hobbies that exercise helps, helps the environment and improves your diet may not be a negative thing. So whatever the underlying psychological cause for gardening is, I think everyone should continue to do so. In the United States in particular, dealing with obesity and pollution as its two main problems, I think gardening can only serve to improve the state of the world.
Of course, I'm no psychologist, I'm just a curious gardener. I often stay for hours to ask what makes me a garden. What makes me go outside for a few hours every day with my garden tools, and facilitate the little time the growth of plants that grow naturally on their own? I May never know, but in this case, ignorance really is happiness. |

Choosing and Planting Perennials
|
| Tuesday, December 9, 2008 |
If you were growing a vegetable garden for a while, you may feel a little unhappy with the way it is easy to watch. I also began my career as gardening with a garden, but I decided that it was not quite as pleasant to watch as I would have liked. I heard from a friend that the use of perennial flowers can be an excellent way to brighten up my garden without adding extra work for me.
Perennial flowers are strong, flowers that return each year without having to replant or to carry an overload of work. During their off seasons, flowers and stems back and you can hardly tell the same plant is there (and not just dying and looking like hideous brown clumps in your garden). When it is time to bloom, flowers entirely new growth where the elders were.
Before deciding to perennials or not, you must ensure that your soil is good drainage. If the water remains saturated for long periods of time, you must build a raised bed. To test, dig a hole and fill it with water. Wait a day, then fill it with water again. All traces of water should be passed within 10 hours. If the hole is not completely dry, you'll need to build a raised bed.
Picking your perennials can be a complicated process. The objective should be to have them flowering as much as possible during the year, you will need to create an overview of the year. Search the different types of flowers you want, and create a calendar of flowering. If you plan it right, you can have another type of flower in bloom at any time in years. Getting the right mix of seeds can give your yard constantly changing colors.
When you buy seeds from your local nursery or florist, you may be able to find a mixture of seeds tailored to your region. This research really difficult from the job. Usually, these mixtures are optimized for the local climate and do great jobs always have flowers growing in your garden. If one of these is not available, you can ask employees what they think would be a good mixture. They should be happy to help you do something together that will be optimal for what you want.
You must use mulch when planting perennials. This will reduce the overall amount of work you have to do by reducing the amount of weeds and increasing water retention. The bark or pine needles great work, I found, and depending on the rest of your yard you may have on hand at no charge. As for fertilizer, you must use it sparingly eleven plants begin to come to life.
When you actually planting seeds, you must put in small clusters separate directions. Because they tend to spread, and if you have too many too close together, they eventually do nothing but smother each other. As you plant them, to throw a little fertilizer extremely low. Soon, you should start to see flowers bloom. |

Choosing a Garden that is Perfect for You
|
|
If you want to start a garden, the first thing you need take into consideration is the type of garden you. There are many choices and often it can be difficult to choose one, but we hope you can to reduce it. But reducing it, you'll gardening experience easier for you and plants. If all your plants are Similarly, it should not be very difficult to look after them all. Here are some of the main garden ideas for you to choose.
If you are looking for something to just look nice in your garden, you want a flower garden. These are usually filled with perennial flowers. Perennial flowers are flowers stay healthy throughout the year. They are basically weeds because of their hardiness, only pretty. Different areas and different climates have flowers that are considered perennials. If you make a quick Internet search for your domain, you can probably find a list of flowers that bring your garden to life. It is generally just need to work in the planting stage - after the flower care themselves. The only drawback to this is that you do not produces results.
Another choice for your garden is to have a vegetable garden. Those usually require a bit more work and research of a flower garden, but can be much more rewarding. Whatever time of year it is, you can generally find a vegetable that is still thriving. This way you can have you give your garden produce almost every day of the year! When Starting a garden, you must build it with the thought in mind you'll be adding more types of vegetables measuring later. This will your scalability. Once all your crops are out of season, you will not be stuck with almost nowhere to put new crops. Vegetable garden is ideal for someone who wants to produce some, but does not Devoting all waking hours to perfecting their garden (see below).
One of the most difficult types of gardens to manage is a garden of fruit. It is certainly the most high maintenance. When the cultivation of fruit, much more will attract pests due to softness. You not only to cope to have only the right dirt and fertilizer, you have to deal with choosing a pesticide that will not kill whoever eats the fruit. Your fruit garden will probably not produce the year. The soil must be fair Now, for plants to grow, and to another culture during his off-season could be disastrous for his growth process. If you're willing to a lot of work put into maintaining a garden, fruit garden could be a good choice for you.
So now that I described some of the main types of garden that people choose, I hope you can make a good decision. Basically, the type of garden returns to this type of product you want, and the amount of work you want put in it. If you're looking for any product with no work to go with flower garden. If you want lots of delicious products, but you're ready to spend hours each day in your garden, then a garden of fruit. Just make sure you do not get something you can not handle! |

Mulching for Free
|
| Sunday, December 7, 2008 |
I’m sure that if you are reading this, you have used some form of mulch during your gardening career. However, you probably didn’t know that there are many other options for organic mulching that you can explore. These days, many gardeners are discovering new sources of free mulch that has been there all along; an untapped resource. These include clippings from a lawn, or woody prunings from other plants in your yard. You will be surprised by how beneficial all these things can be, and how often the opportunity arises to use them.
Many gardeners have taken to spreading out their excess grass clippings across the rest of their yard. You may think this will look tacky, with big piles of grass just sitting in your yard as if you were too lazy to rake them up. However, if you spread them out enough then you won’t even be able to tell that there is an excess amount. Leaving the extra grass on the yard acts as a sort of mulch by preventing evaporation and weed growth. With this extra water, you won’t have to water nearly as much to keep your grass green. When I started leaving my grass clippings, I had to adjust the frequency of my sprinkler system because I was worried my yard was getting too much water!
If your garden is in more need of mulching than your yard, it is not unheard of to rake up all the grass and transport it to your garden. By making a small layer around the vicinity of the plant, you’ll apply all the same benefits from leaving it in your yard. My yard is rather green on its own, but I often have trouble with my plants staying green and healthy. So, rather than leave the grass clipping in my yard, I move them all around my plants. It is just a matter of choosing what your highest mulching priority is.
Sometimes, our pruning activities will lead us to have an amazing amount of branches and twigs. If this is the case, you should consider renting a wood chipper to put all of those branches to use. After one day of intense pruning, you would be surprised at just how many branches you end up with. Rather than throw these away, you can turn them into a huge amount of mulch for your plants. However, if your pruning has not left you with that big of an amount, you should bundle it all up and save it to add onto the next batch. This is because the chipping machines can be slightly expensive to rent, and you want it to be absolutely worth it!
Over time, all organic mulches need to be replenished. This is because they will naturally decompose in the conditions of your yard. Usually you can tell for yourself just by looking at it, but sometimes it can look perfectly regular but still have problems. If you start to notice any poor plant growth whatsoever, you should replace your mulch. Always keep in mind that during the process of decomposition, your mulch will use up the valuable nitrogen in the soil. Without this, the plants will be missing a key nutrient. There are several types of fertilizers available on the market that are specifically designed to deal with this problem.
The use of mulches in the yard and garden is something everyone should try. Not only can it save lots of time by reducing the amount of garbage you have to transport out, but it increases the healthiness and integrity of your plants by putting that so called garbage to good use. So if you think you would be able to save a good amount of branches and twigs for chipping, or if you think that you are ready to stop raking up all your grass clippings, then I think that mulching is for you. |

Picking the Ideal Location for your Garden
|
|
Once you have chosen this garden you want, there are many other factors you must decide before going to work with your gardening tools. Mainly, you must choose its location. This is usually decided by several factors: How do you water it goes, how it needs shade, etc. Some these issues can be very important in deciding whether your garden lives or dies, we must not take them lightly. You need to take each special consideration.
Siting in your backyard garden is one of the most important things to decide. You want to choose a location that will provide an ideal climate for plants in your garden. I do not know what type of garden you're dealing with so I can not give you specific advice but if you search Google for the plant you're dealing with then You'll find a multitude of sites informing you of the perfect conditions for its growth. After that, it's just a matter of finding the most shaded or more sun in your garden.
Another factor is how you plan to water your garden. If you have a sprinkler system already installed for your lawn, then it could be a good idea of your garden in the middle of your garden. Then it get water at the same time, and require no extra work on your part. But if this does not provide a good location for your garden, you might end up watering hose or by dragging a sprinkler there. In this case, simply make sure your garden is within the ideal distance for a to reach a pipe. While this may not seem like a good thing at the base all of the location of your garden, you'll be surprised how nice it is to plan in advance.
Get the perfect amount of shade for your garden can be difficult business. Once you have a basic idea where you want your garden, you might want to watch and record the number of hours he spends in sunlight and how much in the shade. Compare your results to a website, and you should be able to determine if the seat you have chosen is ideal or not for planting and creating your garden in. Of course, the amount change as the seasons change, but this should give you a good idea of what essentially to wait for the rest of the year. If necessary, you can later establish a kind of shade to protect your garden to have too much sun.
After you've determined the ideal spot for your garden and if it has the amount of sunlight, and you will be able to water, you're one step due to start your garden. Of Of course there are other factors that I have forgotten here, but you should be able to decide if your location is good or not based on sense. Just think: If I were a plant, would I be able to prosper here? If you can honestly answer yes, I think its time for you to at the head of your local garden store and buy the necessary land and fertilizer to begin! Have fun! |

Installing a Drip Irrigation System
|
|
If you’re looking for ways to keep your garden watered without wasting too much time and money, you’ve probably gone through a lot of options in your mind. Maybe you’ve considered a sprinkler, a hose, or a good old-fashioned watering can. All of these methods might be convenient, but most of the time you will end up wasting water on plants that don’t need any more. If you live in a drought stricken area like I do, you know that every bit of water counts. I ended up getting a drip irrigation system. I haven’t regretted this decision at all.
When you install a drip irrigation system, you can choose one of two varieties: above ground and below ground. The above ground version drips small amounts of water continuously onto the ground, and allows it to soak in. It is all regulated from a pressure controller, which ensures that the water just comes out at a drip instead of a spray or a stream. These pressure regulators are very inexpensive. The whole drip system can be set up with a pressure regulator and a garden hose with holes poked in it (although it is ideal for you to get a pipe designed for this type of use, I’ve found that the hose method works acceptably).
The underground system is a bit more of a pain to install and maintain. But if you’re really into the aesthetic aspect of your garden and don’t want any visible watering system, then you might consider it worth it. It’s essentially the same as the above ground version, only a small trench is dug for the hose or pipe prior to any planting. This allows the water direct access to the roots for the most watering efficiency. Plus, you can impress your neighbors by having a beautiful garden without ever going outside to water it! They’ll be baffled.
To choose between the two systems, you need to take several things into account. Do you have the same plant layout year round? If it is always changing, you probably won’t want to bury your hose. It can be a pain to dig it up and re-align it with all your new plants every year or so. Even if your plant layout never changes, you need to consider how much you really mind seeing a hose in your garden. If it really bothers you to the extent that you’re willing to work for a few hours to get rid of it, then by all means bury it. But otherwise I would suggest staying above ground if for nothing else than the convenience of repairing and rearranging.
One of the main advantages of the drip irrigation system is its efficiency. Instead of spraying large amounts of water willy-nilly like a hose does, it makes the most of your precious water by putting it exactly where it is needed. It can also provide your garden with constant watering, instead of just having to go thirsty whenever you’re not around to water it.
So if you’re looking for an easy, cheap, convenient, and efficient alternative watering method, you should go out to the gardening store today and purchase the necessary items to install a drip irrigation system. I think you’ll be surprised at how much easier it is to maintain a garden after you have it. |

Improving Your Garden by Adding a Fountain
|
|
A great way to spice up your garden is to add a water feature. These can be both soothing and aesthetically appealing. I've found that there’s nothing more relaxing than sitting on a bench next to my garden and listening to my fountain while I read a good book or do some studying. Putting in a water feature is fairly easy and relatively inexpensive, and will add immensely to the pleasantness of your garden. Also, the maintenance level is minimal.
Usually, people install fountains for the benefit of the natural ambience it provides. For some reason, being around a gorgeous scene of water gives you a positive energy. This is also good if you practice Tai Chi or some form of yoga or meditation. The constant drone of the water is exactly what most people need to concentrate on what they are doing. Even if you're not into that kind of stuff, just being in a garden with a fountain has a sort of meditative quality to it, even if you're not trying to do so. I recommend it to anyone.
When you first decide to put in a fountain, you need to put great care into picking out one that will go well with the rest of your garden. If you have any other decorations, you want to consider if it goes well with your motif. Does the fountain you're considering stand out in your garden like a sore thumb, or does it look like it was meant to be there? If you're like me, you can't naturally tell whether the fountain will be a good addition to your garden just by looking at it. So my solution was to bring my sister (a natural at fashion design and that kind of stuff) along with a picture of my garden to the store. I was able to get her expert opinion, as well as see for myself what it would look like. By doing this I was able to pick a beautiful rock fountain that goes marvelously with the rest of my garden.
However, I still had a slight problem with supplying my fountain with power. You see, my garden isn't very close to my house. I thought it would look pretty tacky to run an extension cord across my yard, so I had to come up with another solution. I discussed my situation with a Home Depot employee, and he quickly found me the exact solution I needed: an extension cord meant for being buried! All it took was a few hours of digging a small trench across my yard, and I had power to my fountain without an unsightly cord running across my yard. After I got over this little hitch, my fountain plan went beautifully.
So if you're looking for a way to make your garden a more classy and beautiful place to be, I hope you consider installing a fountain. The whole process is surprisingly inexpensive, and I think that you will be very happy with the results. Having a fountain in your garden is not only soothing, but it also adds a lot of character to an otherwise bland garden. Remember, gardens are not just for giving us vegetables! A garden is a place to go when you want to retreat from the outside world and dwell in your own thoughts with no disturbance. |

Optimizing Your Garden for Drought or Water Conservation
|
| Saturday, December 6, 2008 |
Living in Colorado and a gardener has been rather stressful in the In recent years, that this was not the subject of a serious drought. The city is imposing watering restrictions which are not give enough water for lawns and plants. I had to renovate my garden to make it more water efficient. Now, because of technology that I used, I am the one in my neighborhood with a garden that is not entirely brown. So if you live in an area that is undergoing a period of drought or if you just want to save water, I suggest using some of these techniques as well.
First, I took all my plants. The soil was, I did not help retain water well, so I had to water about two times more than necessary for to get really absorbed the roots. If you have this same problem, you can fix it by loading the ground with lots of compost. It is not only prevents water from escaping, but encourages the plant roots healthy and able to survive more.
Once I was made to optimize the ground for my new low-water plan I was ready to replace all my plants. I decided that the placement of all My plants reflects the amount of water needed to keep them alive. All plants that do not require much water I placed on one side of my garden, and then only progress in the amount of water needed to Across the garden. As a result of my new arrangement, I did not waste water plants that do not require as much.
The installation of an irrigation system drip was another movement of my hand which reduces the amount of water that I need all my water garden. The great thing about these systems is that they constantly drip into your plants, so that every drop is absorbed. With traditional watering systems, generally the roots become too overwhelmed by the enormous amount of water in the soil. Thus, many seeps right just past. This is all taken care system with the drip.
If you still seem to need more water than you can provide your garden you might consider plants that you could replace them with less water depend on plants. If you want a good shrub that does not use more its share of water, look for heavenly bamboo. It is not just tolerance droughts, but looks rather decorative throughout the garden. Herbs such as rosemary are useful in preparing meals, and are rarely thirsty.
If you try to find flowers that are still lush and beautiful despite the lower amount of water, look for varieties like penstemon Garnet, Blossom Apple, Moonbeam, and midnight. You can draw hummingbirds and butterflies with varieties like Cosmos and Yarrow. The best part of all these plants is that they do not look robust and resist, but they are safer. Your neighbors will not say 'Look , they have downgraded their facilities only to resist drought. What Chumps! "Instead, they will be marveling about how you keep your flowers to in the midst of regulation of watering.
One of my favorite plants resistant to drought is the lavender plant. I could go on pages about it. A large group of plants looked Lavender incredibly beautiful in your garden, and requires no to water flourish. Pineapple sage is another personal favorite. It is a 2 + foot shrub that smells strangely of pineapple. This is another great attract hummingbirds, and leaves are also useful to add flavor to the drink.
So if you're in the position I have been, and you are facing a drought and Sprinkling regulations may be, I suggest you try things that I mentioned. Even if you're just trying to conserve water or be generally more effectively with him, I think you'll still be able to benefit. |

Maintaining a Compost Heap
|
| Friday, December 5, 2008 |
Many people who maintain gardens have a large amount of organic waste, grass clippings and leaves of plants died. Unfortunately, many of wasting money and time to have this waste transported to a landfill. It is not only a waste of good compost, it is a waste of everything that happens in the transport process (the dustbin of human time, the money you pay for the move, etc.). It is really a parody.
All this garbage that people try to get rid of a supplement may be best for your garden than any fertilizer or chemical. If you properly facilitate the breakdown of all waste, it changes chemically until it is in such poor condition that it may be beneficial, but nothing of nutrition for other plants. Therefore, you can activate all the things you put in high-grade fertilizer for your garden.
Usually, the compost is maintained in a pile somewhere in your yard. Usually, the thought of a compost heap brings disturbing images to mind; rotten piles of waste emitting a terrible odor. However, if you maintain, you'll be able to produce great compost without producing an offensive odor. The first time I started my compost pile in an effort to improve the health of the environment, I made several mistakes. They included the prevention of the stack of oxygen it really necessary, and keeping dry. It was found decomposing in a not very beneficial, and production of the odor so foul that I had government agents knocking at my door.
When you choose your place where you put all these documents, you must cover a larger area in square feet. Having deep compost heap is not a good idea, because usually the deepest sections will not be exposed to all that is necessary for the work process. It is better to distribute all over a large area. If you have a shed or a shack tool of any kind, it is possible to get it on the roof (with boards to prevent it from falling, of course). I saw this done on several occasions, and it helps keep the battery out of the way, while retaining a large square footage.
A compost heap can be any organic waste from your yard, garden or kitchen. This includes leaves, grass, leftover food that will not be consumed, or newspaper (no more than a fifth of your pile should consist of newspaper, which are due have more difficulty than the composting time with the rest of materials). Usually, if you have a barrel devoted to store all these things, it will fill in several weeks. It is quite easy to get compost, but more difficult is to get into compost.
After starting to get a wide range of materials in your compost heap, we must moisten the pile. This encourages the composting process. Chop also each element of the stack into pieces as small as possible. As the materials begin to compress and melt together as they decompose, often outside of the head and aerate the pile. You can use a shovel to mix everything, ventilation or a tool to search dozens of small holes in it. This will increase the flow of oxygen to each part of the stack, and oxygen is necessary for decomposition to take place.
If maintaining a compost pile looks like something that interest you, start considering the various investment options. The most difficult to maintain a battery is to choose a place that offers enough square footage without intruding on the rest of your yard or garden. Although you can usually prevent the horrible odor that most people associate with lots of compost, it is still not a pleasant thing to have to search every time you go for a walk in your garden. |
